Text Box: Government Funding Cuts Impact LAYN
August 22, 2002
LAYN has been working hard to advocate for what is needed for our kids. As many of you know running a non-profit right now is a difficult task. Everyone's funds are down. The next few years are going to be lean due to the economy and the emotional state of being that comes with a slow economy. However those of us who work with abused and neglected children know that a slow economy results in a higher population of kids that we will need to serve. As we have been cut in funds from our state government our numbers in our Drop In Center on Cahuenga Blvd have almost doubled in the last few months. The work doesn't stop because the economy slows down.
LA Youth Network has been serving kids in LA County for over 15 years. We have worked hard to support the Hollywood Community where we are located and have done a wonderful job. We are very successful at what we do and we are able to provide services with our now four locations on a very lean budget. We truly want all of our resources going to our youth. Our youths needs have to be our priority. In order to meet their needs we need good staff, individuals who are professional, patient and caring. We have found wonderful people. Unfortunately recently we had to lay off some KEY staff. This was truly a difficult task. It not only affects the individuals but the youth, the remaining staff, the community and overall program. It is difficult all around.
As some of you know although those of us who run non-profits are individuals who care about the greater good and have passion for the cause we are working with, we also have to effectively operate our organizations. We have income and expenses just like any business. If we weren't effective, the organization would not be around to continue to work for the very cause in which it was started. Even with the previous cut backs, LAYN is still experiencing financial hardship. This in part is due to the lack of a state budget as of the writing of this article (August 22, 2002) and partly because of the events of September 11th. The effects of which will be felt now and for time to come.
During these lean times, we will continue to need your help and the help of your friends, colleagues and family members in order for us to effectively operate our programs and meet the needs of our youth. I am thrilled to say that when the call went out that we were being cut funds from the state that our supporters rallied and donated what ever they could (noted by an *). We raised over 20,000 dollars in cash and over 10,000 in in-kind support in a matter of a few weeks. It was phenomenal and on behalf of LAYN, I thank you. All of your donations will go to what is needed most.
I know that we can count on all of you for your continued support. Here at LAYN we are doing our part. We are working on three fundraisers already planned for the fall. You will get an invitation to the first of two big events planned for the 2nd week in November. Please keep an eye out for it. I look forward to seeing many of you there. On behalf of our youth, I thank you for your continued support.
